“Don’t Let The Bank Win“
About 10 years ago I got a phone call from my Dad. He was struggling to talk. I could hear him trying to hold back tears. I was getting ready to call 911 when my Dad blurted out “The House is Getting Foreclosed on”. Not something I was expecting to hear out of my Dad’s mouth. My Mom and Dad had always been on top of their bills. Unfortunately, five years prior my Mom had a stroke and was in an extended care facility, which was very expensive, even with health insurance. My Dad had recently been diagnosed with Adult Onset Leukemia. He was extremely tired all the time he didn’t have the energy to pay any bills.
I didn’t ask a lot of questions because that would not have helped the situation. The only questions I did ask was “When is the auction? Can you please give me permission to speak with your bank?”.
A months after getting everything straightened out my Dad and I were talking. During our conversation he apologized for the foreclosure on the house. I told him that there was nothing to apologize for. He said he felt embarrassed and ashamed. That’s why he told me sooner. He thought he could handle the problem on his own. That’s why he didn’t ask for help. He said felt he had let the whole family down. He got mad at the bank for doing this to him. At one point he shared that he had actually thought of letting the bank take the house. Then he said “But I didn’t want the bank to win.” We laughed. He told me he was grateful that I had never placed any blame nor asked any non pertinent questions, just the two.
